SET Participants
2015-16 Academic YearMennonite Healthcare Fellowship (MHF) encourages persons studying for healthcare professions to learn and serve in cross-cultural mission/service settings in developing countries. To further this goal, MHF provides educational grants for travel and living expenses for a Student Elective Term (SET).
MHF was pleased to award Student Elective Term grants to the following students for the 2015-16 academic year.
Daniel Driver is originally from Goshen, Indiana and is a graduate of Goshen College. He resided in Indianapolis, Indiana during his years of study at Indiana University School of Medicine where he graduated with his MD degree in 2016. During his final year he carried out his Student Elective Term in Quito, Ecuador through the Child Family Health International (CFHI), an international NGO based in San Francisco.

Katie Ruth grew up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where she attended James St. Mennonite church and Lancaster Mennonite High School. She loved playing soccer, running, reading, and learning new things. She continued all of these activities at Eastern University, and graduated with a BS in Biochemistry with a minor in Astronomy. Her college years included a range of experiences including traveling to Kenya, Zambia, and Mexico, as well as lab research and a cross-country bike trip. Katie’s love for meeting new people, traveling, constant learning, science and varied experiences led her to a career in medicine. She graduated in 2016 with her MD from Temple University in Philadelphia. Amidst her studies, Katie had the opportunity to volunteer at some local organizations as well as spend a summer on a Navajo reservation. She was thankful and excited to travel to Macha Hospital in Zambia for her SET term.
Carrie Schlabach is from Holmes County, Ohio, and is a 2012 graduate of Eastern Mennonite University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a minor in Spanish. She is currently living in Richmond, Virginia. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in May 2016 with her Master’s degree. She recently passed her boards and is now certified as a family nurse practitioner. She did her Student Elective Term at a clinic in Mumbai, India during January and February of 2016.

Keith Suter grew up in Pandora, Ohio where he attended Grace Mennonite Church. In 2012 he graduated from Bluffton University where he received a BA in Social Sciences. Upon graduation he moved to Washington, DC for a yearlong commitment working with low income immigrants as part of the Mennonite Voluntary Service program. He is currently living in Denver, Colorado pursuing a Master’s degree in public health at the University of Colorado. He plans to spend his Student Elective Term in Machala, Ecuador working on dengue fever prevention and surveillance.
